Hey! Are you out on the grassy fields again to search for a book that will make you curl up deliciously in your favorite corner with a hot tea or coffee? If you are a lover of fantasy, a bit of tragedy, flashback memories & detective works, then today is your lucky day! Today I am going to make a book review for The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton.
Rating: *****
1. The Plot
(Spoiler Alert: Minimal spoiler ahead!)
The plot focuses on the life of a little girl named Nell left alone on a ship to Australia with nothing but a few seconds of a mysterious woman called The Authoress' image left in her head & a few stuff, more importantly a story book. She was told by The Authoress to stay in the ship then left and never came back. With only one very blurry flashback & a story book for a clue, our little girl grows up and becomes a very old woman with a granddaughter to live with. Meanwhile, she is still being haunted by the memory & knows nothing about her past. Finally, she sums up her courage & starts digging in only to find that she is being led into a labyrinthine path to dark & complex secrets.
2. The Map
Yep, there is a map, a quite detailed one and this is one of the first things you will find in the book. Of course, I won't tell you what the map contains so as not to spoil things. Lovely little addition to an already lovely book!
3. The Garden
There is a garden in the story, that is for sure. It's not just metaphorically used to describe forgotten, flowery & beautifully chaotic such as our Nell's life. Where is this garden though ? It's not in Australia, that's for sure. How Morton managed to hide a big thing such as a garden is one of the many mysteries & mind art that you will discover in the book. The discovery of the garden itself is already a story on its own.
4. The Mysterious Woman
Nell knew her by the name The Authoress and hers was the image that forever haunted Nell's mind. She has no clue as to whether who The Authoress really is and if she had something to do with her or the storybook. All she remembers is that The Authoress gave her a very strict instruction to stay in the ship. Why? Was she the one who gave her the storybook? Was she the one who wrote it? If she did, why did someone like her with maybe the purest of hearts that enabled her to write children's stories use the same heart to leave a child alone with practically nothing with her in a ship leaving for a faraway place?
5. The Storybook
Ah! A rare case of storybook in a storybook. When little Nell was left on the ship, she didn't know at first that she had a storybook with her all along. She discovers it later in her lonely life. The storybook is just like any other storybooks , it has beautiful fairy tales. Turns out, the storybook is very popular & very rare as well. Like really, really-limited-copies-rare. What does the storybook had to do with her? Who left it with her? Is it even for her? Why, of all things tangible, a storybook and not money or something edible instead? This storybook is not like any storybooks in other books, just described & its stories summarized. Morton will make you experience the storybook itself without you having to buy another book!
That's enough teaser/review for you guys, I hope you enjoyed! It's worth keeping & is also on the top of my few favorites list.
