Read: Chalk - Bill Thomson

Sleepless night? Spend it on a good book!

Hello! I'm here again to give you another dose of book review. This time it's a children's book Chalk by Bill Thomson! It's not just another children's book though, I'm so excited!

You know that feeling when you just can't sleep, suddenly you stumble upon a good book and then losing yourself in it? I'm a bit sleepless right now but it was time well spent! So, I'll just grab a cup of coffee and be properly awake for this review. Why? Cause it's such a good book and I can't wait to share it with you guys!

As I was trying so hard to sleep before dawn, I bumped into a book while in the internet. It's a picture book called Chalk and I didn't realize that at first. Blame my sleepless eyes! At first, it looks like just another kiddie book complete with a picture of a green dinosaur on the cover. I was like, "Okay. Well since children fall asleep when someone reads them stories or staring at pictures, why can't I? I'm a child as well..at heart." When I started flipping the pages on my kindle, that's when I realized..It's a wordless picture book!

And guess what, when Asti woke up in the middle of the night, which she normally does, I just read her the book. (Well I did not "read" but I told her the story the way I understood it). She fell asleep instantly!

So here it goes..

·         Art Style

Okay, first things first. Since it has nothing but pictures in it, I would definitely have to give you an idea of how it looks. Usually you would come across kiddie books with drawings like outline and colors to fill them in, something to squeeze the creative juices from your child's mind and letting the child do the interpretation of the pictures from drawings to reality on his own. This one? Just Amazing. The style is realistic and detailed! Hair strands and wrinkles on creatures or things that need them are very visible. Trying to develop your little kid's imagination or artistic tendency? I suggest check this book out and show it to your kid! For little kiddies who are just starting, it's always best to spoonfeed their imagination with books/pieces of art like this and when the creative juices starts flowing on its own, you can give them the outline & colors type books without worrying as to how they will interpret the pictures.

·         Plot

Starts off as a green dinosaur, the one on the cover (thankfully, it's not purple!), gives three children a giftbag containing colorful chalks. Just like kids left alone with a bunch of chalks, colored or plain white, they started drawing everywhere. Wait though, here's the twist! Everything they draw, as soon as it's complete, becomes real. Wait till you see the look on the children's faces when they realized it. So, yes that's where the whole story revolved, the magic of drawing something and seeing it become real right infront of you. I wish those chalks were real!

·         The Artist

Bill Thomson is such an amazing guy! I tried googling him just a while ago and I found more art treasures in his portfolio! He draws very good as well but boy, his paintings are just amazing. He has other picture books too and you won't be disappointed with them! Imagine how much time, sweat and love he spends to give us books such as "Chalk"! Such a good way to help you teach your children at a young age to love and read books, explore the beautiful world of art, learn spontaniety, analysis and experiencing quality story time!

Witness the three children, experience the magic while experiencing the goodness of the art for yourself!
